Why the Most Successful People Often Feel the Most Lost

In the corporate world, we are taught to value speed, logic, and constant movement, but there is a specific season in every major life transition, whether it’s a career pivot, a divorce, or a spiritual crisis, where the old maps no longer work.
At Mother Elephant, I call this stage ‘The Belly of the Whale’.
It is a 15-stage cycle of growth where you have left the ‘Known World’, but haven’t yet reached the ‘New’. If you are currently in this liminal space, you’ll likely recognise these three signs:
1. You feel exhausted even after sleeping. This isn’t a failure of resilience - it’s an energy leak. Your psyche is using its vitality to process deep internal shifts, leaving very little for your ‘logical’ daily tasks. We often call this burnout, but it is frequently a crisis of alignment.
2. Old things (hobbies, friends, goals) don’t feel the same. The Persona or the professional mask you’ve worn for years is beginning to crack. Things that used to bring you joy or a sense of achievement now feel hollow because they no longer fit the person you are becoming.
3. You feel like you’re waiting. You might feel a desperate urge to ‘do something,’ yet every direction feels blocked. This waiting is actually your unconscious doing the heavy lifting. You are in a state of suspension because the next version of you hasn’t fully formed yet.
The Takeaway: You aren’t failing. You are incubating.
The Belly of the Whale is a necessary phase of the journey where we integrate the ‘Shadow’ and drop the baggage of who we thought we had to be. You can’t outrun this phase, but you can map it.
When we stop treating this as a problem to be ‘fixed’ and start seeing it as a phase to be navigated, the exhaustion starts to lift.
Are you navigating a messy transition? At Mother Elephant, I help leaders and creatives use structured, visual diagnostics to map their current chapter and reclaim their vitality.
If you are ready to stop guessing and start mapping your next step, let’s connect.
